Whether you like working with children, youth, adults or seniors, at cultural facilities, festivals and special events, or contributing as a member of a council-appointed group, there is a volunteer opportunity for you. You may wish to volunteer once a week, once a month or a few times a year at special events—we have options to fit everyone’s lifestyle.

Volunteering gives you the opportunity to contribute to your community and help establish a personal and professional network. You can also make new friends, practice English and develop leadership skills that can be transferrable to a career.

Please note: You don't need to be a West Vancouver resident to volunteer for most opportunties (you do for committees and groups), but most positions have a minimum age requirement of 14 years. Some volunteer placements require a criminal record check, but not all.

Steps to Becoming a Volunteer

Step 1

Decide you would like to join and ensure you meet our Eligibility Requirements:

  • Minimum 14 years of age
  • Proof of valid BC Medical, BC Care Card or BC Services Card with a Personal Health Number
  • Good understanding of English
  • Eligible to Volunteer in Canada
  • Commit to a minimum of 3–6 months
  • Complete an online orientation and further training as needed
  • Fully vaccinated against Covid-19 (2 doses)
Step 2

Register for our online volunteer orientation by calling 604-925-7270 or online at activewestvanrec.ca.

Registration is free for members of the West Vancouver Seniors’ Activity Centre and $20 for everyone else.

Upon registration, you will receive a link to the online orientation which consists of a video with important information and a quiz.

Complete the online orientation.

Step 3

Adults who are successful will receive a welcome email from the volunteer coordinator and a phone call regarding next steps. Proof of identity (BC Services Card with Personal Health Number) will be required. Police Information Checks (which will cost $21 in West Vancouver) will be discussed; please make sure not to get one prior to this meeting.

During COVID-19, we are looking for assistance in the following adult volunteer roles:
- Lunch delivery volunteers to help deliver 200 lunches a day to seniors (requires some lifting)
- Volunteers to support at-risk seniors

We will post more volunteer opportunities in the future as they become available.

Youth who are successful will receive a welcome email. Proof of identity (BC Services Card with Personal Health Number) will be required. Although we are accepting applications, we have limited volunteer positions for youth during COVID-19.
