Socially Active: Making Friends in West Vancouver
West Vancouver is a growing community with a diversity of backgrounds, experiences, abilities and identities.
Socially Active is a new program designed to connect newcomers with long-term West Vancouver residents. Through a new friendship, you might learn a new language, improve your English, get to know the community around you, share your experiences and skills, or try something you have never tried before!
Participants will be matched based on personality type and interests, and will connect with each other for 1 to 1.5 hours per week (online or in-person, based on their own schedule) over a six-month period. They will receive invitations to events and workshops that they can join together, meet others, learn about and explore the community, participate in interactive activities such as nature walks or cooking, fitness, or arts classes—either in an in-person or virtual setting.
If you are a newcomer, register for this program and we will contact you for an interview.
If you wish to participate as a mentors/long-term resident, you are required to be registered as a volunteer with the District of West Vancouver and you can apply for this program by contacting the Volunteer Coordinator at 604-913-2703. Mentor applicants will be invited to an orientation.
NOTE: This program has no fixed schedule. After interviews, paired friends will make their own schedule to meet up and socialize. Participants will receive invitations to Socially Active program group activities.

Are you new in West Vancouver? If yes, welcome to our community! Join this tour to learn about the West Vancouver Community Centre facilities, and how to find and register for activities. Tour participants will receive a Newcomer Pass with some free admissions.

Low-Cost ESL English Class with Janet
Improve your English skills by speaking, reading, watching videos, and listening in an engaging two-hour class led by an experienced Canadian ESL instructor, Janet. Break out into smaller conversation groups—led by native English speakers—giving you an even better opportunity to converse and learn!
Some of the topics discussed will include news of the day, Canadian culture and history, post-pandemic life, and community events. You’ll be introduced to English idioms and phrases, as well as grammar, and vocabulary.
The goal of this class is to help you boost your English skills to help you participate more fully in your community and to better understand the resources available to you.

Are you a new or expectant mom in West Vancouver? We have a number of programs designed to help you stay active and meet other new moms in your new community!
Programs for 55+ Adults
Are you or your family members over 55-years-old and new in West Vancouver? We offer several amazing activities and programs at the West Vancouver Seniors’ Activity Centre (SAC)!

Low cost, newcomer-friendly summer camps. Language support is available upon request. We thank our summer camp funder, Dacoda for making it possible for us to offer these camps at a lower cost.
Super Sports: Be Fit, Fast, and Fair
Give your children the opportunity to learn new skills and get active under the guidance of trained coaches! Each day of camp features multi-sport activities designed to improve skills and develop movement to improve game play. Participants will also learn the rules of games and sports while developing strategy to enhance play. Team work, leadership, and fair-play will be emphasized.
Family Firefly: Create Your Migration Story
Have you and your children moved from one city/country to another? If yes, this camp is for you!
The Family Firefly Project combines theatre, literary, and visual arts-based learning to facilitate an opportunity for adult and child participants to tell their unique migration stories and share them with their classmates through storytelling, drama, and visual art.
Adult (parent or caregiver) participation is not required but highly encouraged in this family-focused camp. Adults and children will be in separate rooms to learn and explore storytelling skills.
